Derby 133

May 5th, 2007 · No Comments

Congrats to Street Smart and his team…. A poem has been stuck in my head or at least parts of it have been…so here it is in its entirety
That Circle of Burning Red by Ben Harper
Strike boldly now this moment
Our first Saturday in May, Strike boldly now this moment
‘Tis yet another Derby Day.
Our moment in the Bluegrass,
Our moment in Kentucky.
Once again, time to be fast,
Much better to be lucky.

Many stories have been written,
Many yarns have been spun.
Many horses have been ridden,
Many Derbys have been won.
Champions have worn crowns

In the warm red blush of a rose.
That Moment at the Downs,
That Moment won by just a nose.

This day,’tis history we speak.
No gold means more to keep.
Come from far, come from near,
To celebrate that so dear.

Of Great Dame, and of Sire,
All of particular persuasion,
Come those steeds of desire,
To this magnificent occasion.
Let the trumpet sound the race

Of Spectacular Bid
Seattle Slew
From that Circle filled with grace
Of Secretariat
and Citation, too.

That Moment of a jockey’s prayer,
That Moment to turn every head.
That one brief Moment to prepare

In a Circle of Burning Red.
Oh! That Circle of Red,
That Circle of glistening gold.
Only few have been led,
Where the winners stand so bold.

That glorious Winner’s Circle,
Where one stands alone and knows.
That Moment in the Circle,
That Moment of the Rose.
